Definition

What is conditional logic in a form?

Conditional logic is a rule that watches an answer and changes the form because of it. Each rule has two halves: a condition (the answer to look for) and an action (what to do about it).

A conditional logic form carries at least one of those rules, so two people filling in the same form can see two different sets of questions. A freelancer answering "just me" never meets the procurement questions. An enterprise buyer never meets the self-serve pricing screen. Both finish faster.

  • Branching logic sends people down separate paths based on what they pick.
  • Skip logic is the survey term for jumping past questions that no longer apply.
  • Conditional logic is the umbrella term. In Upform all three are the same rule list.

Rules are evaluated on the respondent's device while they answer, so a branch costs no page reload. In a conversational form that matters: the next question has to land the instant someone presses Enter, branch or no branch.

Anatomy

How a rule is built

One rule, as many conditions as you need, one action. Here is a real rule from a sales qualification form, exactly as the builder lays it out.

Rule Summary

When Plan is any of "Pro, Business" AND Team size greater than "10" → Show field: Onboarding call

The builder reads it back to you If Plan is any of "Pro, Business" and Team size is greater than "10" → Show field: Onboarding call. Every rule prints a summary line like this, so you can check the logic without opening a single dropdown.

1. The field

Any question already in the form. Reorder the steps later and the rule follows the question, not its position.

2. The operator

Upform only offers the operators that make sense for that field type. Pick a date question and you get is before and is after, not "starts with".

3. The value

Type it, or pick it from the question's own options on choice fields, so no rule ends up pointing at text that no longer exists.

4. The action

Show, hide, jump or end the form, plus the question it applies to. One action per rule keeps the list readable at thirty rules.

Each of them compares an answer, and the AND/OR switch decides how the conditions inside one rule combine. Grouped below by the field type each one belongs to.

Equals and Does not equal are also offered on Number and Slider fields; of these number checks, Rating and Star Rating get only Equals, Greater than and Less than. Text comparisons ignore capitalization, so "GERMANY" and "germany" both match.

Actions

Four things a rule can do

Two of them change what is on screen. Two of them change where the form goes next.

Show

The target question stays hidden until the rule fires. Use it for the follow-up only some people should get: a customer rates you 3 or below, and only then do they see "What went wrong?". Point several rules at the same question and any one of them reveals it.

Hide

The opposite default: the question is part of the form until a rule takes it away. Someone answers "No" to "Do you have a design team?" and the three brand-guideline questions disappear. Hidden questions are skipped in the flow and come back empty in your responses.

Jump

Send the respondent straight to a specific question and skip everything in between. This is classic skip logic: a recruitment form where "Which role?" jumps each applicant into their own set of screening questions. A jump only fires from the question the rule is watching, so it never hijacks an unrelated answer.

End form

Close the form early and go to the Thank You screen. Someone outside your service area, or under your minimum budget, should not have to answer nine more questions before finding out. Their partial answers are still saved, so you keep the data on who you turned away.

In the builder

Logic sits beside the question you are editing

The Logic panel is one tab in the right-hand column, next to Question, Design, Connect, Share and Results. You never leave the form to edit its rules, and the middle column previews every branch as you build it.

  • Every rule can be named, collapsed and switched off without deleting it.
  • Duplicate a rule when two branches differ by a single value.
  • The preview runs the real logic engine at desktop, tablet and mobile widths.
  • Saving is manual, and Upform warns you before you leave with unsaved rules.

Three logic patterns worth stealing

Most good branching comes down to one of these three shapes. Each is two or three rules, not thirty.

  1. Qualify and route

Ask the one question that sorts people, then send each group to its own path. A single Choice question about budget or team size is usually enough. This is the backbone of every lead generation form: the small accounts get a short self-serve path, the large ones get the questions your sales team actually needs answered.

Budgetis any of10k+, 25k+→ jump to Scoping
  2. Branch by persona

One form, several audiences. Ask who someone is on screen one, then show only the block of questions written for them. A client intake form can serve brand work and web work without asking a brand client about hosting. Use show rules rather than hide rules here, so new questions default to invisible and nothing leaks into the wrong path.

Project typeis exactlyWebsite→ show CMS questions
  3. Short-circuit the unqualified

End the form the moment you know the answer is no. If someone is outside your delivery area or below your minimum, close it politely on the spot and use the Thank You redirect to send them somewhere useful. You collect fewer junk submissions, and your completion rate and drop-off funnel start reflecting real demand instead of dead ends.

Countryis none ofDE, AT, CH→ end form

Keep the rule list short on purpose. Three clear rules beat fifteen overlapping ones. There is more on structuring longer forms in our guide to multi-step forms, and on why people quit halfway in form abandonment.

Straight answer

What the logic engine does not do

There is no scoring or calculation engine in Upform today. Logic compares answers. It does not add them up, weight them, or do arithmetic across questions, so you cannot build a quiz that returns a score or an ROI calculator that prints a number. You can still route people by numeric answers with greater than, less than and between, which covers most qualification work. If you genuinely need a score, send every response to Google Sheets and do the math in the sheet, or post it to a n8n workflow and calculate it there. We would rather tell you this now than let you find out after you have built the form.

Frequently asked questions

What is conditional logic in a form?

Conditional logic is a rule that watches an answer and changes the form because of it. Each rule has a condition (the answer to look for) and an action (show a question, hide it, jump to another one, or end the form). A conditional logic form carries at least one of those rules, so two people filling in the same form can see two different sets of questions.

Is conditional logic free on the Upform free plan?

Yes. Every operator, every action and an unlimited number of rules are included on the $0 free plan, alongside unlimited forms and unlimited responses. Pro costs $12 a month and adds unlimited file storage, removal of Upform branding, up to five team members and early access to new features. Logic is not one of the things you pay extra for.

What is the difference between skip logic and conditional logic?

They describe the same mechanism from different angles. Skip logic is the survey term for jumping past questions that no longer apply, and branching logic usually means sending people down separate paths. Conditional logic is the umbrella term for both. In Upform you build all three the same way: a condition, an action, and a target question.

Can one rule check more than one question at once?

Yes. A rule holds as many conditions as you need and a single AND/OR switch decides how they combine. With AND every condition has to be true before the action fires; with OR any one of them is enough. If you need AND for some checks and OR for others, write them as two rules against the same target.

Can Upform calculate a score from the answers?

No. Upform has no scoring or calculation engine today, so logic compares answers rather than doing arithmetic on them. You can still route people by their answers using ranges such as between, greater than and is any of. If you need a numeric score, send responses to Google Sheets and calculate it in the sheet.

How do I test logic rules before publishing the form?

The builder's middle column is a live 1:1 preview of the published form, so you can answer your own questions and watch the rules fire while you edit. Switch it between desktop, tablet and mobile to check the branch on each width. Forms stay private until you publish them, and saves are manual, so nothing reaches respondents until you are ready.
