A Formstack alternative without the enterprise price tag

Formstack is a document and workflow platform that happens to contain a form builder, and it is priced like a platform. If all your team needs is forms people finish, Upform does that part for $0. Unlimited forms, unlimited responses, logic included.

Free is free, not a trial. Pro is $12/month when you want the branding gone and five seats.

The short answer

Upform vs Formstack, in 60 words

Upform is a free Formstack alternative for teams that only need the form. Formstack sells a suite: forms plus document generation, e-signature and approval workflows, with no permanent free plan. Upform builds conversational forms and nothing else (21 question types, 20 logic operators, nine integrations), with unlimited responses at $0 and Pro at $12 a month.

The three reasons

Why teams look for a Formstack alternative

Almost nobody leaves Formstack because the forms are bad. They leave because they are renting a platform to run a request form.

You bought a suite to send one form

Document generation, e-signature and approval routing are all in the price whether or not anyone on your team uses them. Plenty of Formstack accounts are one intake form, one contact form and a spreadsheet at the end of it.

There is no free tier to fall back to

Formstack runs on a time-limited trial, not a permanent free plan. When the trial ends or a budget gets cut, the form stops being an option and starts being a renewal conversation. Upform's free plan has no clock on it.

The entry price needs approval

Formstack's cheapest Forms plan is listed around $99 a month at the time of writing, and the suite plans that add Documents and Sign go up from there. That is a purchase order, not a card swipe, for a form a marketer wanted on Tuesday.

Being straight with you

What Formstack does that Upform does not

These are not small gaps. Four capabilities Formstack has built out over years, and Upform has none of them.

Document generation

Formstack Documents merges submitted answers into a finished PDF, Word file or slide and delivers it. Upform has nothing equivalent. Answers land in a responses table with a side drawer, a CSV export, and whichever integrations you connect.

Legally binding e-signature

Formstack Sign collects and stores signatures with an audit trail. Upform has no signature field among its 21 question types and no plans to fake one with a drawing canvas. If your form ends in a signature, this is the end of the conversation.

Regulated-industry packaging

Formstack sells HIPAA-eligible plans with a signed BAA and the paperwork an enterprise security review expects. Upform runs row-level security, per-form upload scoping and reCAPTCHA v3, but it does not sell a compliance package or sign a BAA.

Approvals and Salesforce

Formstack routes a submission through named approvers and writes natively into Salesforce records. Upform's logic routes the respondent, not the request: it shows, hides, jumps or ends the form, then hands the answer to Sheets, Slack or your CRM.

Fit check

Who should stay on Formstack, and who should not

Two minutes here saves you an afternoon rebuilding a form in a tool that cannot finish the job.

Stay on Formstack if

  • The form has to produce a document: a contract, a quote PDF, a signed agreement
  • You handle protected health information and need a signed BAA on file
  • A submission has to be approved by two or three named people before anything happens
  • Your forms write into Salesforce objects and your admins depend on that
  • You collect card payments inside the form itself
  • More than five people need their own seat, with SSO and an audit trail

Move to Upform if

  • Your renewal buys a platform and you are using the form part of it
  • Responses need to reach a spreadsheet, a Slack channel or a CRM and nowhere else
  • You want conditional logic and file uploads without a plan tier attached to them
  • Completion rate matters more than field density, since a 24-field page loses people
  • You run client intake, briefs or request forms rather than regulated paperwork
  • You would rather spend the difference on anything other than a form builder

The same intake, fewer walls

A supplier form that does not look like a compliance exercise

Operations forms are where completion goes to die: twenty-four fields on one page, three of them required for reasons nobody remembers. Upform asks the same questions one screen at a time, and shows you exactly which screen people quit on.

  • File Upload steps with the allowed types and the size cap set by you
  • Logic that hides the seven insurance questions when the contract value is under your threshold
  • Your logo, colors, Google font and radius, saved as a theme the next form inherits
  • A per-question drop-off funnel so you can delete the question that costs you submissions
  • Every answer appended to Google Sheets and announced in Slack, free

Migration

How to move a Formstack form in four steps

There is no importer between the two. Step two is the one that matters: be honest about what the form has to do before you rebuild anything.

  1. Export your submissions first

Download everything as CSV while the account is still active. Your submission history should never depend on a renewal date, and you will want it for reference when you rebuild.

  2. Sort your forms into two piles

Pile one: forms that end in a generated document, a signature, an approval chain or a payment. Those stay on Formstack. Pile two: intake, requests, applications, feedback, registrations. Those move. Most accounts find pile two is the larger one.

  3. Rebuild the questions and the routing

Start blank or clone a client intake template, paste the question text across and pick the matching type from the 21 available. Then rebuild your show and hide rules in the Logic panel using the 20 operators.

  4. Repoint the destinations and swap the link

Connect Google Sheets, Slack, HubSpot, Notion or a webhook with an HMAC signature, publish, then replace the old URL wherever it lives. Embed it if you want the form on your own domain.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free Formstack alternative?

Yes, if what you need is the form. Upform's free plan is permanent and includes unlimited forms, unlimited responses, all 21 question types, conditional logic and every integration. It is not a trial and there is no card to enter. What it does not include is document generation, e-signature or approval routing, because Upform does not build those at all.

Does Formstack have a free plan?

No. Formstack runs on a time-limited free trial rather than a permanent free tier, and the paid Forms plans start in the high double digits per month at the time of writing. That is the main reason people search for a Formstack alternative. Check Formstack's own pricing page before you decide, because plans change.

Can Upform generate documents or collect signatures?

No to both. Formstack Documents merges answers into a finished PDF or Word file and Formstack Sign collects a legally binding signature. Upform has neither, and there is no signature field among its 21 question types. If your process ends in a signed document, stay on Formstack.

Is Upform HIPAA compliant?

Upform does not offer a HIPAA-eligible plan and does not sign a Business Associate Agreement. It does run row-level security on every table, scope uploads per form, keep forms private until you publish them and put invisible reCAPTCHA v3 on public submissions. If you handle protected health information, Formstack's regulated plans are the right tool and Upform is not.

Can I import a Formstack form into Upform?

Not automatically. Upform has a one-way import from Google Forms only, so a Formstack form is rebuilt by hand. Most take fifteen to thirty minutes: copy the question text across, pick the matching field type from the 21 available, then rebuild your routing in the Logic panel with the 20 operators.

Does Upform have conditional logic like Formstack's?

It has rule-based logic, included free. You build a flat list of rules, each an AND or OR group of conditions, using 20 operators across text, numbers, dates, choices and uploads. Four actions are available: show, hide, jump and end the form. It routes the respondent, so it does not replace Formstack's multi-step approval workflows and it has no scoring or calculation engine.

How much does Upform cost?

Free is $0 forever with unlimited forms and responses. Pro is $12 a month, a launch offer at half the $24 list price, and it adds unlimited file storage, branding removal, up to five team members and early access to new features. Online checkout is not live yet, so you email hello@upform.com with the subject Upform Pro upgrade request, and we set the account up by hand, usually the same day.
