The short answer

To import a Google Form into Upform, open the Forms dashboard, create a new form and choose Google Forms, Import existing. Connect your Google account, search for the form and click Import. Upform creates a new form from its title, description and questions and opens it in the builder, where you check each question, add your theme and logic, and publish. It is a one-way copy: nothing is written back to Google, and responses you already collected stay in Google Forms.

How it works

Import a Google Form in four steps

No export file, no copy and paste, no third-party migration tool. The importer sits in the same dialog you use to start any new form.

  1. Choose Google Forms in Create new form

On the Forms dashboard, start a new form. The dialog offers three ways in: From Scratch, Template, and Google Forms, Import existing. Pick the third.

  2. Connect your Google account

A Google window opens and you authorize Upform with your own account over OAuth. No password to share, no API key to paste. The dialog then shows which account is connected.

  3. Search, then click Import

Your Google Forms appear in a list with the date each was last modified. Type to filter by name, click Import on the one you want, and Upform builds the new form.

  4. Review in the builder, then publish

The imported form opens straight in the form builder. Walk through every question in the live preview, fix anything that came across differently, add your theme and publish.

What the import brings over

What comes across, and what stays in Google Forms

The import copies the structure of the form, not its history or its settings.

Comes across

  • The form title, which becomes the name of the new Upform form
  • The form description
  • The questions, as Upform questions you can edit, reorder, duplicate or delete
  • All of it as a new, separate form, so an import never overwrites anything

Stays in Google Forms

  • Responses you already collected
  • Section branching (go to section based on answer)
  • The theme, header image and colors
  • Quiz answer keys, points and feedback
  • Settings such as email collection or a one-response limit

Reviewing the import

Google Forms question types and their Upform match

Google Forms and Upform do not share an identical set of question types. While you review, this table names the Upform type that does the same job, so you know what to switch a question to.

Google Forms questionWhat to check
Short answerShort TextIf it asks for an email, a number, a phone number or a website, switch it to Upform's dedicated type for that answer.
ParagraphLong TextRespondents press Shift+Enter for a new line and Enter to continue.
Multiple choiceSingle ChoiceGoogle's "multiple choice" allows one answer, which is Single Choice in Upform. Options get A, B, C keyboard shortcuts.
CheckboxesMultiple ChoiceSet a maximum number of selections if the original limited them.
DropdownDropdownCheck the option list, especially a long one.
Linear scaleRatingRating runs from 1 to the number you set. For a custom minimum, maximum and step, use Slider Scale instead.
DateDateDate answers can drive logic with is before, is after and is between.
File uploadFile UploadSet the allowed file types and size cap. Respondents do not need a Google account to upload. Files count toward the free plan's 100 MB of storage.
Title and description blockStatementA Statement screen shows text with no input, useful for an intro or a section break.
TimeNo time typeAsk for the time as Short Text, or offer set slots as Single Choice.
Multiple choice grid, checkbox gridNo grid typeRebuild each row of the grid as its own Single Choice or Rating question.

The Upform type that does the same job, not a promise of how each question converts. Google Forms question types checked September 2026; verify against Google's help pages.

Why move the form

What the same questions can do once they are in Upform

The questions were rarely the problem. What sits around them is.

Your brand instead of Google's

Add your logo, a background image, a font from the Google Fonts picker and your own colors, then save the look as a theme for the next form. Respondents see one question per screen instead of a long scrolling page. The free plan keeps a small Upform badge, which Pro removes.

Form design and branding

Logic past "go to section"

Rebuild the branching with rules that show, hide, jump or end the form, using 20 operators combined with AND or OR. Text, number, date and upload answers can drive a rule, not only choices.

Conditional logic for forms

See where people stop

Views, starts, completion rate and average completion time on every form, plus a per-question drop-off funnel that points at the exact question people quit on.

Form analytics and drop-off

Still deciding? The Google Forms alternative page compares the two line by line, Typeform vs Google Forms covers the other common move, and the Google Forms limitations guide lists where Google runs out.

After the import

Send the responses where the old ones went

A Google Form usually fed a spreadsheet, and moving the form does not have to break that habit. Connect Google Sheets with your own Google account and every new response appends a row to the sheet you pick.

Add Slack to post each response to a channel, or send the whole response as JSON to any endpoint with a webhook. Every integration is on the free plan, next to unlimited responses.

Before you switch

What the import does not do

It saves you retyping. It is not a sync and not a destination, so check these four things before you move a live form.

It is a copy, not a sync

Edits you make in Google Forms after the import do not reach Upform. If you rework the original, import it again: each import creates a new Upform form, and the earlier one stays as it is.

Old responses stay in Google

The import brings the form, not its answers. Download past responses from Google Forms as a CSV or keep the linked sheet, and use Upform's responses table from switch-over day on.

Graded quizzes belong in Google Forms

Upform has no scoring engine, so answer keys, point values and automatic grading do not carry over and cannot be rebuilt. For a graded test, keep using Google Forms.

Your Google Form keeps collecting

The import does not close the original. When the Upform version is live, swap the link or embed code wherever the old form was shared, then stop accepting responses in Google Forms.

Review before you publish

Open every imported question once and check its type, its options and whether it is required. The live preview shows the form on desktop, tablet and mobile, and the survey question types guide explains how to split a grid into separate questions.

Frequently asked questions

Does importing change or delete my Google Form?

No. The import reads the form and builds a new one in Upform. Your Google Form keeps its questions, its responses and its link, and it keeps accepting answers until you turn that off in Google Forms. Nothing made in Upform is ever written back to Google.

Are my existing Google Forms responses imported?

No. The import rebuilds the form, not its history: Upform receives the title, the description and the questions. Responses you already collected stay in Google Forms, where you can download them as a CSV or keep them in the linked sheet. New answers to the Upform version are stored in Upform and appear in its responses table.

Will every question convert exactly?

Not always, so review the form before you publish. Google Forms and Upform do not have identical question types, and Upform has no grid question, no time question and no quiz scoring. Open each imported question once in the builder and check its type, its options and whether it is required.

Does the import stay in sync with Google Forms?

No. It is a one-time, one-way copy. Changes you make in Google Forms afterward do not reach Upform, and changes in Upform never reach Google. If you rework the original, import it again, which creates a new Upform form next to the first.

Can Upform send responses back to Google Forms?

No. Google Forms is an import source only, not a destination. If you want responses in a Google product, connect the Google Sheets integration and every new response appends a row to a sheet you own.

Whose Google account does Upform connect to?

Yours. You authorize Upform with your own Google account over OAuth in a pop-up window, and the import dialog shows which account is connected. A Disconnect link sits in the same dialog, and forms you already imported stay in Upform after you disconnect.

Is the Google Forms import free?

Yes. It is included on the free plan, which is $0 forever with unlimited forms, unlimited responses, all 21 question types, conditional logic and every integration. Pro is $12 a month and adds unlimited file storage, removes Upform branding and allows up to five team members.
