The free plan problem

You can collect the data. Reading it is what costs money.

SurveyMonkey's free Basic plan lets you write a survey and send it anywhere you like. The wall arrives later, in the results tab, where only the first few responses per survey are visible and export is reserved for paid plans.

That is an awkward place for a paywall. By the time you reach it you have already written the questions, picked the audience and spent their attention. The answers exist. You simply cannot open them, sort them or move them anywhere else.

Upform puts no wall there at all. Every response lands in a table you can search, filter by form and filter by date. A row opens a side drawer with every answer and that drawer has its own URL, so you can paste one response straight into Slack for a colleague. Completion rate and drop-off analytics sit on the same screen, and the CSV button works on day one of a free account.

What a free Basic account holds back

  • Responses past the per-survey cap stay hidden until you upgrade
  • CSV, PDF and spreadsheet export sit on paid plans
  • Questions per survey are capped, so long-form research needs a plan
  • Skip logic and several question types are paid features
  • Your survey carries the provider's branding and a footer link

On Upform, every one of those five is included at $0. Branding removal is the only item on the list that costs anything, and it is part of Pro at $12 a month.

Being fair about it

When SurveyMonkey is still the right call

It has been the default survey platform for twenty-odd years for good reasons. Three of them are things Upform does not do at all.

You need respondents you don't have

SurveyMonkey sells access to a global respondent panel, targeted by age, country, income and more. If your research question is about a market rather than your own customers, you need people to ask, and Upform has no panel to sell you.

You want benchmarks and methodology

Question banks written by research staff, industry benchmark data to score your results against, cross-tabulation and significance testing. That is a research product, not a form builder, and Upform does not pretend to be one.

You run an enterprise research program

Single sign-on, procurement paperwork, regulated-industry plans, dozens of seats under central governance and a decade of historical data in one account. Upform gives you five teammates on Pro and granular permissions. That is the ceiling today.

If none of that describes your week, the trade goes the other way. Most people reaching for a survey tool are asking their own customers, users, students or applicants something. And for that, a capped free plan is the only thing standing between them and the answers. Compare it with the Typeform alternative and the Google Forms alternative too.

Analytics

Find the question that is costing you the sample

A completion rate tells you that something is wrong. A per-question funnel tells you which question. In the example beside this, asking for a budget range in third position loses nearly a third of the people who reached it, and moving that question to the end is a ten-second fix.

  • Views, starts, submissions and incomplete counts on one screen
  • Per-question drop-off, color-coded by severity
  • Average completion time, desktop and mobile split, country breakdown
  • Included on the free plan, not sold as an analytics add-on

Pair the funnel with conditional logic and the awkward questions stop reaching people they do not apply to. Our guide to form abandonment covers the usual culprits in more detail.

Switching

Moving a survey across takes an afternoon

There is no SurveyMonkey importer, so this is honest manual work. Here is the order that wastes the least time.

  1. Get your existing answers out first

Export whatever your current plan allows before you cancel anything. If export is locked, copy the visible responses into a spreadsheet by hand. Historical data does not migrate into Upform, so keep your own archive.

  2. Rebuild the survey from a template

Start from a customer satisfaction survey, an NPS survey or a blank form, then paste your question text across. All 21 question types are in the picker: rating, star rating, slider scale, picture choice, dropdown, file upload and the rest.

  3. Add logic, then your brand

Rewrite skip logic as Upform rules: conditions joined with AND or OR, and an action that shows, hides, jumps or ends the form. Then set your logo, colors, font and progress bar style in the design panel so the survey looks like it came from you.

  4. Publish, connect, watch the funnel

Publish to a public link or embed it in a page, then send responses onward with Google Sheets, Slack, Notion or a signed webhook. Check the drop-off funnel after the first fifty responses and fix the worst question.

Frequently asked questions

Is SurveyMonkey free?

There is a free Basic plan, but it is a sampler rather than a working tier. As checked in September 2026 it caps a survey at roughly 10 questions and shows only about 10 responses per survey, and exporting your data is reserved for paid plans. You can send a survey for free; reading and keeping the answers is what costs money.

Can I export responses for free?

Not on SurveyMonkey's Basic plan. CSV, PDF and spreadsheet exports sit behind a paid plan, which is why people often rebuild a survey elsewhere once the answers start arriving. On Upform, CSV export is part of the free plan, with no row limit and no export credits.

How many responses can I collect on Upform's free plan?

Unlimited responses across unlimited forms, permanently. The free plan is not a trial and it does not expire. You see every response in the responses table, you can search and filter it, and you can export the whole thing to CSV whenever you want.

Is Upform a good SurveyMonkey alternative for market research?

It depends on what you need. If you are surveying your own audience, customers, users, employees or applicants, Upform covers it with 21 question types, conditional logic and drop-off analytics. If you need to buy respondents from a panel, compare results against industry benchmarks, or run cross-tabs and significance testing, SurveyMonkey is the better tool and Upform has none of those features.

Can I import my SurveyMonkey surveys into Upform?

Not automatically. Upform has a one-way importer for Google Forms, but no SurveyMonkey importer, so you rebuild the survey in the builder. In practice that means starting from a template and pasting your question text across, which takes about twenty minutes for a survey of fifteen to twenty questions.

Does Upform have conditional logic like SurveyMonkey's skip logic?

Yes, and it is on the free plan. You write a flat list of rules, each one combining conditions with AND or OR across 20 operators, and each rule can show a question, hide it, jump to another step or end the form. There is no scoring or calculation engine in Upform, so if your survey needs weighted scores you will need another tool.

What does Upform cost after the free plan?

Nothing, unless you want what Pro adds. Pro is $12 a month, a launch price at 50% off the $24 list, and it adds unlimited file storage, removal of Upform branding, up to 5 team members and early access to new features. Online checkout is not live yet, so Pro accounts are set up by hand after you email hello@upform.com and the team replies the same day.
