Use Mailchimp's own form when
- All you need is an email field in a footer or a pop-up
- You want the form managed inside your Mailchimp account
- Every field on the form is an audience field and nothing else
Connect a form to Mailchimp once and every person who submits it is sent to the audience you picked, with your tags attached and double opt-in if you want it. You authorize your own Mailchimp account, match the email and name questions, and publish. It costs nothing on the free plan, which has no cap on responses.
To make a Mailchimp form with Upform, build the form with an Email question, open its Connect panel and authorize Mailchimp with your own account. Pick the audience, match the Email question (required) and, if you like, first name, last name and phone to Mailchimp's merge fields. Add any tags, decide whether Mailchimp should send a confirmation email first, save, send a test member and publish. Every integration ships on the free plan, next to unlimited forms, unlimited responses and all 21 question types.

How it works
No API key to copy, no embedded Mailchimp code to paste into your site, no Zap in the middle charging per task. The whole setup lives in the Connect panel of the form you already built.
Mailchimp cannot add a member without an address, so Email is the one field you must map. Add it in the form builder and make it required, then add first name, last name or phone questions if you want those in Mailchimp too.
Open the form, go to the Connect panel and choose Mailchimp. A Mailchimp window opens and asks you to authorize Upform against your own account over OAuth. Nothing is shared with anyone else's account.
Choose the audience from the list Upform loads from your account, then match questions to merge fields. Upform suggests matches for you (the Email question by its type, name and phone by their titles), and every suggestion can be changed or set to Not mapped.
Type your tags separated by commas, turn double opt-in on or off, and enable the connection for this form. Send test pushes a test member into the audience so you can check it before you publish.

The respondent's side
A Mailchimp form built in Upform asks one question per screen. The person types an address, presses Enter and moves on, which reads more like a short conversation than a signup box.
Keyboard support is complete: Enter to continue, Shift+Enter for a new line, letter and number shortcuts on choices. On a phone the targets are full width and the back and next bar stays at the bottom of the screen, so nobody has to pinch and zoom to subscribe.
Publish it on its own link or embed it on your website, and give it your logo, colors and font with the design controls.

What arrives
Each submitted response is sent to Mailchimp as a member of the audience you picked. Here is where every part of it ends up.
| From the Upform response | Lands in Mailchimp as | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Email question (required) | The member's email address, the one thing Mailchimp needs to create a member. | maya@northgate.io |
| First name question | The FNAME merge field, so a welcome email can open with the person's name. | Maya |
| Last name question | The LNAME merge field. | Okonkwo |
| Phone question | The PHONE merge field. | +44 7700 900123 |
| Tags set on the form | Tags on the member, the same on everyone who submits this form. | upform, newsletter |
| Double opt-in switch | On: Mailchimp emails a confirmation first. Off: the person is subscribed straight away. | Confirmation email |
Every other answer stays in Upform. The responses table has search, a form filter, a date filter and CSV export, a row opens a side drawer with every answer in order, and Contacts collects each respondent's name, email, company, submission count and last seen date. Upform stores the response before it calls Mailchimp, so a failed sync never costs you the answer, and the form analytics still count every start and every drop-off.
Fair comparison
Mailchimp includes embedded, pop-up and hosted signup forms on every plan, free included, and for a single email box they are the right tool. Here is where each one fits.
Mailchimp's form options checked September 2026 on Mailchimp's public product pages. Products change, so check the current version before you decide.
Use it with
A signup is worth more when you know why the person signed up. Tags carry that reason into Mailchimp, and the rest of the answers stay where your team can read them.
Ask for name, email and one qualifying question, then send people to the download from the Thank You screen's redirect. Tag the form with the guide's name and your welcome sequence knows what each person came for.
Lead generation formsRegistrants join the audience tagged with the event, so reminders and the follow-up go only to people who signed up. Session choices and dietary needs stay in Upform, where the organizer reads them.
Event registration formsA volunteer or supporter form tagged "volunteers" feeds the list your updates go to, and double opt-in keeps that list to people who confirmed. Availability and skills stay in Upform for whoever schedules the shifts.
Forms for nonprofitsEach form sends to a single Mailchimp audience with a fixed set of tags. When two groups need different audiences or tags, run two forms, or send the response to a webhook and decide there. Conditional logic decides which questions a person sees (show, hide, jump and end form), not which audience the member goes to.
Honest limits
The Mailchimp connection does one job: it turns a response into an audience member. It does not try to be your email platform or your CRM.
Mailchimp receives the address, up to three merge fields and your tags. Anything else a person tells you, from the company they work for to the answer that qualifies them, stays in Upform, where it is searchable and exportable.
If a member needs richer data on the other side, pair Mailchimp with a destination built for it. HubSpot creates or updates the contact and can attach every answer as a note, and Notion turns the response into a database row with your own field mapping.
Beyond the audience
Mailchimp is where the email goes out. When a response also needs to reach a system that acts on the answers, send it there from the same form, on the same free plan.
Send the whole response as JSON to any URL you control, then decide what happens to it: pick the audience by answer, tag by answer, write to your own database. A webhook fires on the same submission as Mailchimp, so you can run both on one form.
Form webhooksWhen the person is a sales lead as well as a subscriber, HubSpot creates the contact, or updates the existing one when that email is already in your portal, while Mailchimp handles the newsletter.
Form to HubSpot contactsEvery destination connects with your own account and runs on the free plan. The full list lives in the integrations directory.
No. Every integration is included on the free plan, which is $0 forever and comes with unlimited forms, unlimited responses, all 21 question types and conditional logic. Pro is $12 a month and adds unlimited file storage, removes Upform branding and allows up to five team members. Your Mailchimp plan is separate and decides how many contacts your audience can hold.
Yours. The connection is per-user OAuth: you authorize Upform against your own Mailchimp account, and it can only add members to audiences that account can see. There is no API key to paste anywhere. Disconnect whenever you like and the form keeps collecting responses in Upform, the new members simply stop arriving in Mailchimp.
It is a switch on each form. With it on, Mailchimp sends the person a confirmation email before they are subscribed, and they join the audience once they confirm. With it off, they are added straight away. Double opt-in is slower, but it leaves you with a list of correctly typed addresses from people who meant to sign up.
The Email question is required, and first name, last name and phone can be mapped to the FNAME, LNAME and PHONE merge fields. The tags you set on the form are added as well. Every other answer stays in Upform, in the responses table, the side drawer and the CSV export.
Not from the Mailchimp connection itself. Each form sends to one audience with one fixed set of tags, and conditional logic changes which questions a person sees rather than where the member goes. Run a separate form per audience, or send the response to a custom webhook and apply your own rules there.
The response is still safe. Upform stores every submission before any integration runs, so the answers stay in your responses table whatever Mailchimp decides. The Connect panel shows the last sync time and the last error, so you can see what went wrong and fix the mapping or the audience.
