Views, starts and submissions
Upform counts everyone who opened the form, not only the ones who reached the end. Completion rate and average completion time sit next to the raw numbers.
Google Forms is free, fast and unmistakably Google. Upform costs the same $0 and the form carries your logo, your font and your colors, with 21 question types and logic that goes well past go to section.
Unlimited forms and responses on the free plan. Forever.
The short answer
Google Forms is right for an internal poll, a quiz you want graded automatically, or anything that only needs to land in a spreadsheet by lunchtime. It stops being right the moment the form is the first thing a customer, candidate or client sees. Upform is a free Google Forms alternative built for that second case: one question per screen, your own logo and font, 21 question types, 20 logic operators and per-question drop-off analytics, at the same price, $0.

Google Forms limitations
It is free, it is fast, and for plenty of jobs it is enough. These are the five walls people hit, in the order they usually hit them.
Same header block, same radio buttons, same Never submit passwords through Google Forms line under every page. People recognize it in about a second, and the form reads as internal admin rather than as something your company made.
Branching fires only from choice and dropdown questions, and all it can do is send someone to another section. There is no contains, no is between, no is answered, and no way to hide a single question.
You get a header image, a theme color and a short list of preset font styles. Button color, card color, border radius, alignment, background image and progress style are not settings you have.
Google Forms summarizes the answers you received. It will not tell you how many people opened the form, how many started, or which question they gave up on. Everyone who left stays invisible.
Responses land in a Google Sheet, which is genuinely useful. Getting them anywhere else (Slack, HubSpot, Notion, Klaviyo, a webhook) means writing Apps Script or paying a third-party connector per task, per month.
A sixth, for anyone collecting documents: Google Forms accepts file uploads only from respondents signed in to Google. The long version is in the Google Forms limitations guide.
Respondent experience
A Google Form is a scroll: every question in the section stacked on one page, the length of the job obvious before anyone answers anything. Upform shows one question per screen with a progress bar, so a fourteen-question form never looks like a fourteen-question form.

Side by side
Both are free. The difference is what you may change, and what you get to see afterwards.

The fair version
We are not going to pretend it is a bad product. It is a very good one, for four specific jobs.
Google Forms has a real quiz mode: answer keys, point values, automatic scoring and per-answer feedback. Upform has no scoring engine, so for a graded test Google Forms wins outright and we would tell you to stay.
If the audience is your own domain you can restrict the form to signed-in colleagues, collect their email automatically and be finished in four minutes. Nobody outside sees it, so the branding argument does not apply.
Forms to Sheets is one click and zero setup. Upform matches it with a Google Sheets integration, but when the sheet is the whole point and the form is disposable, Google Forms is less work.
A one-question lunch poll does not need a theme, a funnel or an integration. Use the tool your team already has open, and save the branded form for what people outside the building will see.
Design & branding
Everything Google Forms locks is a field in Upform's Design panel, with the live preview beside it. Build the look once, save it as a private theme, and every later form starts branded.

Analytics
The one thing Google Forms cannot tell you is where a form loses people. Upform reports it on every form, free plan included.
Upform counts everyone who opened the form, not only the ones who reached the end. Completion rate and average completion time sit next to the raw numbers.
A funnel down the question list, color-coded by severity, so the question costing you answers is the obvious red one. Usually it is the phone number field.
See form analyticsA desktop versus mobile split and a country breakdown on every form, with a searchable response table, a per-response drawer and CSV export behind it.
Migration
You do not retype anything. Upform ships a one-way Google Forms importer that reads your form and rebuilds the questions on your account. Your Google Form is never modified and keeps working while you set the new one up.
Coming from somewhere paid instead? The same six steps apply. See the Typeform alternative page for what changes.
No card, no trial clock. The free plan is the permanent plan: unlimited forms, unlimited responses, all 21 question types.
Point Upform at your existing form. Every question is rebuilt on your account and mapped to the closest Upform type: short text, email, single choice, rating, file upload.
Grid questions and quiz scoring have no Upform equivalent. Rewrite a grid as a set of single-choice or rating questions, and leave graded quizzes where they are.
Logo, background, Google Font, five colors, border radius, alignment and progress style. Save it as a theme so the next form starts branded.
Show, hide, jump or end the form on any of 20 operators, combined with AND / OR inside a single rule. Preview it on desktop, tablet and mobile before you publish.
Connect your own Google account and every response appends to a sheet you own, so downstream formulas keep working. Then publish a public link or embed the form on your site.
Yes. Upform's free plan is $0 forever and includes unlimited forms, unlimited responses, all 21 question types, conditional logic and every integration. The only free-plan limits are 100 MB of file storage, no team members, and a small Upform mark on your published forms. Pro removes all three for $12 a month.
The five that push people to switch are: the form is instantly recognizable as a Google Form, branching only works from choice questions and only jumps to a whole section, design control stops at a header image and an accent color, there is no view count or per-question drop-off reporting, and anything past Google Sheets needs Apps Script or a paid connector. File uploads also require respondents to sign in with a Google account.
Yes. Upform has a built-in Google Forms importer: point it at your form and Upform rebuilds the questions on your account, mapped to the closest Upform question type. It is a one-way import, so your original Google Form is untouched and keeps working. Grid questions and quiz scoring have no Upform equivalent and need rewriting by hand.
Yes. The Google Sheets integration appends every new response as a row in a sheet you own, and you connect your own Google account so nothing routes through a shared one. Slack, Notion, HubSpot, Mailchimp, Klaviyo, monday.com, n8n and custom webhooks work the same way. All of them are included on the free plan.
Pick the one that lets you control the design and the logic without a paywall. Upform is built for that case: one question per screen, your logo and any Google Font, 20 logic operators, per-question drop-off analytics, and no response cap on the free plan. Typeform and Tally are the other names worth shortlisting, though Typeform's free plan is widely reported to cap you at 10 responses a month.
The names that come up most often are Typeform, Tally, Jotform and Microsoft Forms, usually in threads about a form looking unprofessional or the branching being too basic. The useful filter is what each free plan actually allows: Typeform caps free responses, Jotform caps monthly submissions, and Microsoft Forms is tied to a Microsoft account. Upform's free plan has no response cap and no paywall on logic or integrations.
Yes, on the free plan. Upload a logo and a background image, pick any Google Font, and set the primary, background, text, button and card colors. Save the result as a private theme and every new form starts with it. Removing the small Upform mark from the form is the one branding item that needs Pro at $12 a month.
